Gastric Bypass Q & A

Surgical Clinic of Louisiana

How does gastric bypass work?

Gastric bypass is a minimally invasive procedure that involves making your stomach smaller by creating a pouch at the top of your stomach. This small pouch gets connected directly to the middle part of your small intestine. By bypassing most of your stomach, as well as the upper portion of your small intestine, you can’t eat as much, nor can your body absorb as many calories.

Am I a candidate for gastric bypass?

In general, you need to be more than 100 pounds overweight or have a body mass index (BMI) over 40.0 to qualify for gastric bypass surgery. But you may qualify for gastric bypass if your BMI is as low as 35.0 if you also have chronic obesity-related conditions such as:

  • Type 2 diabetes
  • Hypertension
  • Lipid abnormalities
  • Heart disease
  • Gastrointestinal disorders

When you visit Surgical Clinic of Louisiana, the team will determine if you’re a candidate for gastric bypass surgery by calculating your BMI and evaluating your previous medical history.

What should I expect after a gastric bypass procedure?

Because gastric bypass surgery involves restructuring your gastrointestinal tract, you’re likely going to need to stay in the hospital for observation for about 3-5 days. You can typically return to all of your regular activities within 4-6 weeks.

When it comes to eating, you’ll initially consume liquids and nutritional shakes. Over time, you’ll be able to eat solid foods, although now you’ll fill up quickly. This is why the surgery is so effective: You can’t overeat.

With each passing day, you’ll gradually start to lose weight. Most men and women who have gastric bypass lose between 60-80% of their excess body weight within the first two years after surgery.

The team at Surgical Clinic of Louisiana will continue to support you long after your surgical procedure. They’ll give you emotional support, nutritional counseling, and medical evaluations to ensure you’re reaching your goal weight healthfully.
