General Surgery Q & A

Surgical Clinic of Louisiana

What is general surgery?

General surgery involves providing surgical repair for a variety of injuries and health conditions. Because general surgeons have to go through extensive training in anatomy, physiology, wound healing, and intensive care, they’re able to perform surgeries involving:

  • Digestive tract
  • Vascular system
  • Trauma or injury
  • Endocrine system

Dr. Treen and his team will be with you from preoperative care all the way through post-operative follow-ups, no matter how minor or complex your surgery may be.

How do I prepare for general surgery?

The team at Surgical Clinic of Louisiana will support you every step of the way and make sure you know all the details long before your procedure, so you’ll know exactly how to prepare. Typically, it’s important to:

  • Stop taking medications and supplements as directed
  • Fill any essential prescription medications and painkillers
  • Wear comfortable loose-fitting clothing the day of surgery
  • Schedule a ride to and from surgery

Your surgery will require local, regional, or general anesthesia. Since it can take several hours — or sometimes more than a day — for the effects of anesthesia to fully wear off, you’ll need to have someone stay with you for at least the first 24-48 hours after surgery.

You’ll usually need a follow-up visit within the first week or two of having general surgery, and if you’re unable to drive by that point, you’ll need to plan for a ride.

Can I go home after general surgery?

Generally, yes. Dr. Treen and his team of highly skilled practitioners at Surgical Clinic of Louisiana perform most surgeries with minimally invasive techniques. This means less recovery time. Normally then, after a short waiting period in the recovery room, your caregiver can take you home.

While less common, some procedures require an overnight hospital stay. The team will let you know ahead of time if you can go home the same day, or if you’ll need to stay at the hospital overnight.
