FDA Approves the Expanded Use of the LAP-BAND® System
LAP-BAND® surgery approved by the FDA with lower weight requirements
On February 16, 2011, the FDA approved the expanded use of the LAP-BAND® System for obese
adults with a Body Mass Index (BMI) of 30-40 and at least one obesity-related health condition,
who have failed more conservative weight reduction methods, such as diet, exercise and pharmacotherapy.
Currently, approximately 37 million Americans have a BMI of 30-40 and at least one comorbid condition.
